The VOB file type is primarily associated with “DVD Video Movie Files“. A VOB is the Abbreviation for Video OBject it contains several streams i.e Video, Audio and Subtitles multiplexed together. VOB is based on the MPEG program stream format, but with additional limitations and specifications in the private streams.
On the DVD, all the content for one title set (VTS) is contiguous, but broken up into 1 GB VOB files in the computer compatible file systems for the convenience of the various operating systems. Each VOB file must be less than or equal to one GiB .
If you cannot access VOB files on windows?
When windows gives you an error message saying that it “Cannot open VOB files”, this means either:
- A. You need to a program that can open the file
- B. Or your registry may be damaged

Copying VOB DVD Files.
If you want to copy the DVD files to your Hardisk to play it later you can copy the VOB file from the DVD. Open the DVD in Windows Explorer or Finder on a MAC. The VOB file be in a folder called VIDEO_TS. You’ll also see other files Like IFO, BUP. The IFO files are the information files containing meta data about the DVD and instructions for the DVD player on how to handle the disc. The BUP file is simply a backup copy of IFO files.
